Why Import Passwords into Chrome?

There are many reasons why you might want to import your passwords into Chrome. Maybe you’ve switched to Chrome from another browser and want to take all your saved passwords with you.

Or, you may have erased your saved passwords in Chrome. In this case, you can still import your password backup file (if you have one) to access your saved passwords.

1. Enable Flags and Import Passwords in Chrome

While Chrome includes an option to import a backup CSV file of your saved passwords, this option is not visible by default.

You should visit Chrome’s Flags page, which allows you to enable and disable various experimental features. Here you can enable password import in Chrome, among other features.

  • It’s quite easy to do. Follow these steps to enable the flag and import passwords from a CSV file into Chrome:
  • Launch Chrome on your computer.
  • Type the following in the address bar and press Enter:

chrome://flags

  •  On the Flags screen, place your cursor in the search box and type password import.
  • You should see the Import Password indicator in the search results.
  • To enable this flag, click the drop-down menu next to the flag and select Enabled.
  •  Click Relaunch at the bottom to relaunch Chrome. This will restore all your open tabs.
  • When Chrome is open, click on the three dots in the top right corner, and on the next screen choose Settings > Password.
  • Click on the three dots next to the saved password and select Import.
  •  Navigate to your CSV password file and select it to import into Chrome.

2. Use Commands to Import Passwords into Chrome

Another way to import passwords into Chrome is to use commands. There is a command that enables the import option in Chrome. You can use it to import your passwords from a CSV file into Chrome.

It works on both Windows and Mac computers, but the process is a little different. Here we will explain how to do it on both operating systems.

Import Passwords into Chrome on Windows

  • Open the Start Menu, search for Command Prompt and launch it.
  • Type the following command in the Command Prompt window and press Enter. This takes you to the Chrome executable file on your PC. cd

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application”

  • Next, enter the following command and press Enter. This enables the hidden password import feature in Chrome. After that, Chrome should launch automatically. chrome.exe -enable-features=import password
  • In Chrome, click on the three dots in the top right corner and choose Settings > Passwords.
  • Click on the three dots next to the saved password and you will see the import option. Select this option to import your passwords into Chrome.

Import Passwords into Chrome on macOS

  • Click on Launchpad in the Dock, find Terminal, and open it.
  • Enter the following command in the terminal and press Enter. Then Chrome should open automatically. /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome -enable-features=PasswordImport
  • Click on the three dots in the top right corner of Chrome and select Settings > Passwords.
  • Click on the three dots next to the saved password and select Import.

 3. Enable the Hidden Import Option in Chrome

One of the many ways to enable Chrome’s import option is to temporarily change the code on the Settings page. This way you just need to change the price of one item and the import option will appear.

Here’s how to use this method:

  • Open Chrome on your Windows or Mac computer, click on the three dots in the upper right corner, and select Settings.
  • Click Password on the next screen to access your Passwords section.
  • Click on the three dots next to the saved password and you will see the export password. Right-click on this option and select Inspect.
  • From there, you’ll see the source code for the current page.
  • Find the item that contains the ID menu Import Password, remove the hidden word from its code, and press Enter.

Click on the three dots next to the saved password, and the Import option should now appear. Click on it to import your password into Chrome.

Unlike the flag method above, this is not a permanent change. You have to modify the code every time you want to make the import option visible.

Since we usually import our passwords only occasionally, this shouldn’t be a big deal for most people.

 4. Import Firefox Passwords to Chrome

If you’re switching from Firefox to Chrome, you don’t need to manually import or export your passwords. Chrome has an option that allows you to automatically pull all your information from Firefox.

To use this method, both browsers must be on the same computer. Also, you can use this method on Windows and macOS.

This option allows you to transfer the following data from Firefox to Chrome:

  • Browsing history
  • Favorites/bookmarks
  • Saved passwords
  • Autofill form data

Here’s how to use the method:

  • Launch Chrome, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks and Settings.
  •  Select Mozilla Firefox from the drop-down menu.
  • Check Saved Passwords if you only want to import your Firefox passwords. You can check other options if you want.
  •  Tap Import and Chrome will begin importing your Firefox passwords.
  • When your passwords are imported, click Done.

This method lets you import passwords from other browsers, including Microsoft Edge.

Easily Transfer Your Saved Passwords to Chrome

If you have a CSV file containing your saved passwords, you can import all your passwords into Chrome with just a few clicks, as shown above. It helps you auto-fill the credentials and access all your online accounts quickly.

Chrome offers dozens of features that allow you to surf the web with maximum comfort. Some of Chrome’s features are still experimental, such as the password import feature we just described, but you can still enable them from the flags page.
